Nature Guelph Speaker Series – Catherine Scott: Spiders are among the most misunderstood animals with whom humans share this planet, but a glimpse into their world of ingenious silk traps, masterful masquerade, and dangerous liaisons will show that they are far more fascinating than fearsome.

Catherine is a behavioural ecologist and arachnologist who studies sexual communication in spiders. She completed her MSc degree at Simon Fraser University and is currently a PhD student in Maydianne Andrade’s lab at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Although her research is currently focused on black widows, Catherine spends a lot of time thinking and learning about all kinds of spiders. A former arachnophobe, she is passionate about trying to shift perceptions about these fascinating creatures by engaging in science communication online and in person. She blogs about spiders at spiderbytes.org and you can also find her on twitter (@Cataranea), where she is always happy to answer questions about spiders and other arachnids.
